Shopping for a suitable mattress is fraught with challenge, confusion and misinformation. We have compiled an easy to absorb A-to-Z glossary of the common terminology that you expect to encounter when you shop around for a mattress or a bed. Furthermore, we have also explained about our proprietary technologies, healthcare foams, pocket spring systems, speciality fabrics and allied materials. This glossary should help you understand the jargons so that you can buy your next mattress or bed with confidence.

A

Active Cooling Windows®
Sleep Harvester® proprietary Sleep Resonance Foam® and Sports Recovery Foam have the in-built miniscule cooling windows which use thermodynamics to expel warm air from the mattress core and stream in fresh ambient air for your comfortably cool sleep

Airpulse medical memory®
A body adaptive breathable healthcare foam which helps blood circulation and alleviates pains and aches. Read more about Airpulse medical memory® in OUR INNOVATIONS section.

Anatomical support
It is a complete physical support during your sleep for the purpose of maintaining or improving body functioning with regards to spinal alignment and facilitating smooth blood circulation for comfort and pressure relief

Air bubble in microquilted fabric
The mattress with the in-built comfort bubbles in the padded knitted fabric creates pockets for air regulation across the sleeping area. Thus, the supportive comfort bubbles in the fabric provide strength and durability whist improving air flow through the mattress core.

B

Bamboo fabric
Sleep Harvester® heavy weight premium Bamboo fabric is highly absorbent and breathable and therefore it incredibly wicks moisture and heat away from the body to keep you cool and comfortable in the bed.

Bamboo fabric is good for the environment (eco-friendly) and it is sustainable with hypoallergenic properties (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-mold etc.). It repels odour and it is skin friendly (so good for people with sensitive skin, eczema or allergies).

Blood circulation
Poor blood circulation whilst sleeping is associated with many health issues including discomfort, numbness, muscle cramps, swelling and pain especially in hands and legs. Due to this natural muscle repairs or healing of injuries do not take place at a rapid rate.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses help you reduce this risk of poor blood circulation and associated health issues as described above by minimising pressure on the soft tissues and blood veins for facilitating smooth blood flow which improves your comfort and sleep quality.

Body pressure points (pressure points) and body pressure relief
Our body has some sensitive area (body pressure points) which can produce pain and aches under pressure. When we lie on our back or side, the contact of head, shoulders, back, waist, hips, thighs and legs (7 zones of body pressure points) with the mattress surface results in an uncomfortable and painful pressure development.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses remove or reduce the pressure exerted on the body pressure points by facilitating smooth blood circulation which provides comfort and body pressure relief during your sleep.

Body adaptive mattress
A body adaptive mattress has an auto-response sleeping surface integrated with the comfort core to interact with the body for effective pressure distribution and optimal support to your body weight, frame and size which helps you manage your body pains and aches. Sleep Harvester® has engineered an auto-response sleeping surface integrated with the comfort core to interact with the body for effective weight and pressure distribution and optimal support to your body weight, frame and size.

Body posture
It is important not only for sitting and standing but for sleeping too. A good body posture helps the muscles and ligaments of our back relax and heal themselves when we sleep. Sleep Harvester® ergonomic mattresses encourage, support and maintain a correct body posture to protect your back while sleeping.

Bony prominences
The areas of bone that are close to the skins surface is called bony prominences. These areas are our back of head, ear, shoulders, elbows, sancrum, hips, buttocks, knees, ankles, ball of foot and heels. These organs are most susceptible to pressure injuries as they have the least amount of cushioning. Depending on your sleep position and how much time you spend in that position, different bony prominences (pressure points) are vulnerable to pressure.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses are engineered to respond to the pressure demand and therefore they cocoon the body to maintain a smooth blood circulation for sleeping comfort and protection of soft tissues underneath the skin.

Breathable
When a mattress allows the air to move around easily whilst removing moisture away from your body as you sleep. This keeps you comfortably cool and dry throughout the night.

Egyptian cotton allows the air to move around easily whilst removing moisture away from your body whilst you are asleep. This keeps you comfortably cool and dry throughout the night. Sleep Harvester® mattresses either contain Egyptian cotton, British wool, Bamboo fabric, Tencel fabric or other components that absorb your perspiration from your body and keep you comfortably dry and help you sleep well. Furthermore, because of the high quality components, the performance and durability of the mattresses prolong.

British wool (British wool absorbent)
Wool is environmentally friendly, natural and sustainable. It is highly breathable which allows it to absorb moisture and release away from the body to keep you cool. Furthermore, it is excellent in temperature regulation as it keeps you warm in winter and comfortably cool in summer. It is static resistant for keeping you cool and comfortable. It absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. It speeds up perspiration absorption process to keep you comfortably dry for your soothing sleep.

C

CertiPUR certified foams
This certification demonstrates that the foams used in our mattresses meet the environment, health and safety properties

Cognitive alertness
Cognition is related with our conscious mental activities namely thinking, remembering, decision making, understanding and learning. Sleep deprivation has a negative impact on our alertness and cognitive performance due to decrease in brain function and activity.

Cooling effect mattress (microtencel)
The Sleep Harvester® mattress which is finished with a cooling effect, extremely breathable high definition fabric - this microtencel fabric is eco-friendly and is produced from the sustainably sourced wood. Due to its 50% more absorption capacity than cotton, it incredibly wicks moisture and temperature away from the body for cool and comfortable sleep. It is hypoallergenic and therefore it prevents the growth of germs to make it allergy, asthma and skin friendly. Therefore, the mattress with microtencel fabric is an ideal choice for the hot sleepers and people with allergies and asthma.

D

Dual side sleeping surfaces
A mattress which can be used on both the sides. To prolong its durability and performance, the mattress should be cared for as per the care instructions provided.

E

Egyptian cotton
Cotton produced from the plants grown in Egypt is called Egyptian cotton. This cotton is far better than ordinary cotton.

Due to a perfect combination of climate, growing conditions and agricultural practices, the cotton produced from the Egyptian plants create long yarn of supremely fine quality. Therefore, the fabric produced from Egyptian cotton is super soft, durable and highly breathable.

Ergonomics
Ergonomics is a branch of applied science which deals with the interaction between things and people to promote efficiency and safety. Thus ergonomics is a multidisciplinary science in which products, systems and workplaces are designed to make them safe and efficient for use.

Ergonomics is extremely important as it safeguards your health and well-being whilst minimising your chances of injuries. Dr Ilyas Ansari, the Sleep Harvester® founder is a mattress ergonomics pioneer and has designed and developed these mattresses based on ergonomics so that the users enjoy the maximum comfort, get proper body support and improve their sleep quality.

Ergonomic design
Sleep Harvester® ergonomic design ensures that the mattress you are sleeping on is fit for the purpose and safe to use whilst providing all the expected benefits.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses are engineered for a perfect body adaptation to maximise comfort, safe spinal alignment and head-to-toe body support for reducing pain and aches in adults and is also important for the growing children as it helps them cope up with body pain and aches as well.

Ergonomic mattress
Sleeping on a soft mattress causes your spine to pull down which creates discomfort in lower back. And sleeping on a very firm mattress causes your spine to push up which exacerbates your back pain.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses are backed by sleep research and ergonomics research to encapsulate the medical benefits. Our medium firm, advanced, ergonomically designed mattresses offer a perfect balance of comfort and support which is a must requirement for spinal alignment, body pain management and joints stress relief. Furthermore, our ergonomic mattresses keep you cool for your comfortable sleep.

Ergonomics standards
These standards are applied to the mattresses which meet the stringent criteria of comfort, body pressure relief and anatomical support whilst safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the users

Sleep Harvester® founder Dr Ilyas Ansari developed the innovative mattresses based on which the UK's largest Furniture Industry Research Association developed the stringent ergonomics standards for the mattresses for the domestic use in the UK.

F

Fibromyalgia
It is a common but chronic syndrome that causes bodily pain through soft tissue pain and mental distress.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses hug the soft tissues of your body to create a comfortable cushion underneath for minimising bodily pain and improving blood circulation for comfortable sleep.

Firm mattress
It is important that you pick a suitable mattress when you are over 95 kg. This weight falls under the heavy or overweight category. A soft mattress will not support you adequately and will cause discomfort in your hips and give you back and joint pains. Some of our Sleep Harvester® mattresses are exclusively designed for overweight or heavy people who should choose a firm mattress - heavier the person, firmer the mattress they need. These mattresses have the firm sleeping surface for support and medium firm core for comfort. Thus, these engineered mattresses provide you with balanced comfort and support which is required for improving our sleep quality. Furthermore, we have enhanced the load bearing capacity of these mattresses by completely fortifying all the four sides with the sturdy bridges. This gives the mattress edges much needed strength from all the sides and therefore you can get off the bed easily and comfortably.

H

Hybrid mattress
When a mattress is constructed by employing the foam layers (comfort core) and pocket spring (support core) then that mattress is called a hybrid mattress. Sleep Harvester® hybrid mattresses judiciously combine the healthcare foams for pressure relieving comfort and body responsive pocket springs for bouncy support. This ultimately enhances your sleep quality.

Hygienic sleep
A good nightly sleep is of pivotal importance for mental and physical health which ultimately improves our overall quality of life

Hypoallergenic
A hypoallergenic mattress reduces your chances of triggering allergic reaction. Sleep Harvester® hypoallergenic mattresses are sensitive skin friendly and asthma friendly and an ideal choice for those suffering with skin allergies. These mattresses reduces the growth of microbes.

Hand-tufted mattress
It is a mattress in which the layers of comfort fillings are kept tied-up using tufts. This prevents the fillings to gather together which helps maintain the performance of mattress and prolong its life.

I

Indentation (sagging or dipping)
Indentation is a dip in a mattress that typically occurs in the shoulder and hip zones as they carry the most body weight. Indentation of more than 6 cm may affect your sleep quality, sleep health, physical health, spinal and hip alignment and pressure relief. It can also cause neck strain, muscles and body pains and aches.

The most common reasons for your mattress indentation are the use of an unsuitable base, uneven weight distribution, inadequate care (not rotating or turning the mattress on time) and prolonged use.

J

K

L

Lumbar pain (lower back pain)
Sleeping on a wrong mattress causes or worsens lower back pain as it either fails to support you or it puts too much strains on muscles. Due to this you sleep with poor sleeping posture which reinforces the spinal misalignment and sleeping discomfort. Spinal misalignment is a major contributor to lower back pain.

Therefore, you need a mattress that provides a balanced comfort and back support. Such a mattress avoids muscle soreness. Sleep Harvester® medium firm mattresses help reduce lower back pain whilst giving an ample rest to your spine for rejuvenation during the sleep. Our medium firm mattresses provide a better back pain relief than a common very firm or hard mattress.

M

Mattress core
The overall performance of a mattress depends on its mattress core. The mattress core is composed of two main elements – comfort core and support core.

Comfort core is made up of sleeping surface (top fabric) and the layers underneath. Depending on a type of mattress, these layers could be polyester fillings, foams (memory, reflex, latex, gel or speciality foam) or natural fillings. These could be layered individually or in combination of two or more different foams or fillings.

Support core is either made up of springs (pocket or open coil) or foam base.

Sleep Harvester® mattress cores have been designed individually to complement and enhance the performance of our mattresses and therefore these upscale mattresses are highly comfortable, feel luxurious and improve sleep quality.

Mattress Composition
This gives you a holistic information of all the contents of the mattress so that you can make an informed decision before buying a mattress

Medium firm mattress
Sleep Harvester® medium firm mattresses are designed to keep your spine in its natural S-shape whilst providing you with the much needed support for comfort-rich sleep.

When you sleep on a soft mattress, your spine pulls down to create discomfort and when you sleep on a firm mattress, it pushes your spine up to make you toss and turn.

Motion absorption or motion isolation
When we sleep next to a person and we feel their movement as they roll over, then it deeply interrupts our sleep. Sleep Harvester® hybrid mattresses are engineered to absorb your movement so that you and your partner do not disturb each other whilst you move or turn. This preserves your sleep quality for your refreshing morning and productive day.

N

Numbness
A firm or hard sleeping surface of your mattress can cause numbness which is generally associated with either irritation or compression of nerves whilst you are sleeping in your bed.

Sleep Harvester® sleeping surfaces auto-adjust to your body weight, shape, size and frame to create a cool and comfortable interface between your body and the mattress that removes irritation and eliminates nerves compression for your blissful sleep.

O

P

Pocket Count (Coil Count)
This represents the density of coils in a pocket spring or open coil spring unit. Traditionally it was believed that higher the coil count, better the support the spring offered. This has changed now due to the advancement of spring technology and introduction of innovative designs. Furthermore, the wire thickness (gauge) of the spring unit is important. A mattress quality is characterised with its pocket count and wire thickness. A pocket spring contains an individually wrapped coils which move separately and therefore it is good for motion isolation and comfortable feel.

Point elasticity
Sleep Harvester® speciality foams exhibit an exceptional point of elasticity due to the stretching of microscopic chains under the applied force of your body. This allows these innovative foams to rebound instantly from where your body weight is moved without affecting your sleeping partner. Thus there is neither disturbance due to movement nor roll-together for your partner and yourself.

Pressure Care Posture Support (PCPS)
Sleeping posture and body pressure relief are inextricably linked which affect sleep quality, comfort and support. A wrong sleeping posture can cause or aggravate back pain, slow blood circulation down and may obstruct airways to your lungs leading to obstructive sleep apnea. Furthermore, some recent studies have found that your wrong sleeping posture slows the toxins filtering process of your brain down.

Sleep Harvester® medical technological innovation has been integrated to create our ergonomic mattresses for minimising the pressure on your body to enhance comfort, facilitating your natural blood circulation, correcting your sleeping posture for back pain reduction and aligning your spine for discomfort reduction. Therefore, the users of these mattresses feel comfortable in every sleeping posture (back, side or stomach).

Pressure Care Spine Support (PCSS) ergonomic mattress
Our spine comes with natural S shape which allows the even distribution of our body weight to prevent discomfort whilst we stand, sit or sleep. Therefore, it is important to maintain the natural shape of our spine and keep it aligned during sleep as well. There is a direct association between spinal alignment and sleep quality. Studies revealed that a poor spinal alignment which causes discomfort interferes with getting to sleep as it deprives us from our restorative sleep. Thus this causes us to sleep less with increased discomfort.

Sleep Harvester® medical technological innovation has been integrated in our mattresses to enhance spinal alignment and back support. Therefore, the users of these mattresses feel comfortable in every sleeping posture (back, side or stomach).

Pressure ulcers (bedsores or pressure sores)
The main reason for people to suffer from the pressure ulcers is the damage to the skin and the underlying tissues of their bony prominences (head, shoulders, back, waist, hips, thighs and legs – 7 zones). This damage is caused by a combination of pressure, shear and friction.

A physical indication of pressure ulcer is given as below –

1.     When the pressure is relieved from the bony prominences, the reddened area remains red and the discolouration of skin (blue-black in case of darker skin and non-blanching superficial reddening of lighter skin) happens

2.     When there is a partial loss of superficial skin thickness and you may suffer from blister, abrasion or swollen crater

3.     When there is a full loss of your skin thickness resulting in damage to muscle, bone tendon or joint capsule

Sleep Harvester® mattresses contain our healthcare foams which smoothly absorb your weight whilst comforting the soft tissues for ventilated sleep.

R

Rest and recovery
Your good quality of sleep allows your body to recuperate for improved day time performance and productivity. Sleep Harvester® mattresses provides bio-mechanical support and comfort for quality sleep which reduces fatigue and builds strength.

Roll-off
This occurs when you sleep on a wrong type of mattress where your partner and you end up in the middle of the mattress. Furthermore, a bad quality mattress foundation also affects the performance of your mattress as it does not support the weight and buckles down in the middle due to the weight of sleeping partners.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses are structurally designed to withstand the imbalance in sleeping partners weight and provide the fortified support core for disturbance free sleep.

S

Sleep disorder
Sleep disorder means we struggle to sleep well on a regular basis which causes interference in our daily life. It can have an adverse impact on our mood, energy, concentration, performance, efficiency and overall health. Feeling extremely tired throughout the day is an indication of sleep disorder too.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses improve sleep quality due to which it becomes a manageable task to control the sleep disorder.

Sleep pattern
Sleep is a dynamic behaviour which falls between four stages - one Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and three Non Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses preserve REM sleep as it is important for our cognitive functions (memory, learning, creativity, decision making, understanding) whilst encouraging NREM sleep that gives us deep sleep.

Sleep quality
Sleep quality is a measure of how well you sleep every night and not how many hours you get sleep. You can identify yourself if you are getting a good quality sleep every night by observing the following few things -

1.     You feel rested, recovered and rejuvenated in the morning

2.     You sleep enough hours consistently as per your age group (typically 6 to 8 hours for the adults)

3.     You take less than 30 minutes to fall asleep after getting into bed (subject to no distraction from mobile phone use and TV and no caffeine consumption prior to bed)

4.     You generally do not wake up in the night (waking up once is an exception and fall back to sleep within 20 minutes).

Sleep Harvester® ergonomic mattresses have scientifically proven to improve sleep quality, pressure relief, spinal alignment and reduction in pressure ulcers.

T

Therapeutic benefits
In simple words, it means the benefits we receive by using a method, treatment or action for treating any disease or disorder.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses with innovative healthcare foams assist in managing, minimising or alleviating many problems including lumbar pain (back pain), poor sleeping posture and blood circulation, shoulder and hip pains, aching heels, spinal alignment, pressure ulcers and fibromyalgia to name a few.

Thermal exchange (temperature regulation)
It is related with the flow of temperature in which warm air is expelled and cool air is streamed in to keep the sleeping surface and the mattress core comfortably cool and breathable for enhancing sleep quality.

Sleep Harvester® sleeping surfaces are designed to enhance temperature regulation to keep the contact area between the user and the mattress cool for enhanced sleep whereas the mattress cores allow air to move freely for comfort and dry clean sleep.

Temperature and moisture
The Sleep Harvester® fabrics are hypoallergenic and efficiently absorb and remove moisture away from body whilst regulating air through the mattress surface. Our medical innovation actively wicks warm air away from the mattress and circulates cool air in. This combined moisture and temperature removal action keeps the mattress cool and dry for your comfortable refreshing sleep. Therefore, most of our mattresses are an ideal choice for the hot sleepers and people with allergies and asthma.

Tossing and turning (toss and turn)
Tossing and turning is a disruptive activity when we are trying to fall asleep. We feel frustrated and uncomfortable. There are many factors that can cause tossing and turning including stress, anxiety, overstimulation, poor sleep schedule, diet, sleep apnea, underlying health conditions, bedroom temperature and your mattress to name a few.

Sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress compresses your blood vessels which come in direct contact with the mattress and where most of your body weight falls. Due to this, the flow of blood slows down and it builds the pressure around that area. To release this pressure and to facilitate the smooth blood circulation, you keep tossing and turning in the bed.

Sleep Harvester® mattresses provide comfortable sleeping surfaces which actively promote and maintain your natural blood circulation whilst minimising the pressure built up for your toss and turn free sleep.

 U

UK FR Regulation
By law, the mattresses used for the domestic use must pass the flammability tests (cigarettes and matches ignition test). Thus all the domestic mattresses sold in the UK must conform to BS7177:2008.
